Criterium Racing Format
- Criterium Racing is a form of road / MTB cycling that takes place on an enclosed circuit (mall parking, school grounds or parks)
- Criterium racing helps young riders develop racing skills such as cornering, acceleration, bunch riding skills and competitive thinking.
- Riders race over a pre-determined time + one additional lap after the time period has lapsed
- Time periods are determined by age group and level of proficiency. Involve all age groups in a compact morning or afternoon’s racing that is spectator friendly.
- Circuits are about 1,3km – 2km in length with many corners and some fast straights
- This format brings cycling very close to spectators and attracts large crowds. Take cycling to the people.
- Perfect format for cycling clinics and identifying talent
Township Criterium Series
Criterium racing is conductive to inter-schools racing, as scholars from a school can use the same bicycles across age groups/genders. The idea here is that a school can purchase bicycles through a size curve and have racing though the day, as different age groups race at different times. Interschool's racing can lead to the selection of district teams for inter-district racing. This allows provinces to then invite the district teams to provincial races, with ultimate selection into a provincial franchise team. From there, riders may be invited to be selected into professional race teams. The launch NCAF's In-Community Grassroot series has seen clubs host events that have grown in popularity.
